Leah Wellard
Horse Health / Care
Leah joined the equestrian community at the age of 5, and was instantly hooked. Her love for animals, especially horses, has been a driving force in her personal and professional choices for her whole life. She has had the incredible opportunity to ride and compete in dressage, eventing, and show jumping throughout North America, working with Olympians and World Cup winners from all corners of the globe.
Leah’s equestrian passion has also led her through 8 years of university education where she earned her B.Sc. and M.Sc., in animal science, nutrition, and nutraceutical sciences.
Since graduating, Leah has worked directly with hundreds of horse owners, creating individualized feeding programs for well over 6,000 horses, writing numerous articles for publications, and presenting at numerous educational seminars. Presently, she works for a Victoria-based feed company, Harwood Grains and Stockfeeds, where she formulates feeds and provides nutritional support to promote the health, performance, and welfare of animals across Australia.
She is overjoyed to share her passion as an Animal Nutritionist with thousands of horse owners across the planet.

Feeding Horses with Metabolic Disorders
Feeding horses with metabolic disorders such as laminitis, equine metabolic syndrome, PPID, and insulin resistance.
I will go over briefly what these diseases are, how they develop, and what we can do to support our horses through nutritional intervention.
I focus on an evidence-based approach, breaking down the current scientific research and what it means for our individual horses. I also will cover common myths and concerns regarding the nutrition of metabolic horses and ponies, and supply practical solutions to help horse owners navigate these complex pathologies.
