Everyone in Victoria who lives near dense forest, bush, grassland or the coast needs to prepare their property for bushfire. That includes considering what to do with their animals.
As EQUITANA’s 2024 Official Community Partner, CFA will focus on helping horse owners prepare and plan for the upcoming bushfire season.
Horses are actually quite good at avoiding bushfire if:
- they have enough room to move freely and get a good gallop up in a large open space
- there is minimal vegetation in the large open space.
A written and practised plan will help you remember what needs to be done on fire danger days and in the event of a fire occurring.
It is important to also remember that although you may not live in a high-risk area, you may agist your horse in such an area and you need to consider this.
At EQUITANA, we will be on hand to help you learn how to plan and incorporate your treasured horse into your personal bushfire survival plan.
We will talk about property maintenance, making the decision to relocate your horses, preparing your horse for survival and actions to take after a fire.
This information is also relevant to those running agistment properties, trail ride centres and riding schools.
We look forward to meeting you.
