Dr Jacqui Panozzo
Horse Health / Care
I’m Dr Jacqui Panozzo, a West-Gippsland (Victoria), based scientist, who also has a hobby of breeding Connemara ponies in my spare time.
I’ve owned horses for twenty years, and have been breeding them for ten. Apart from Connemaras, I have a strong passion for the biological sciences and science education, with a Bachelor of Veterinary Bioscience and a Doctorate (PhD) in Parasitology. Professionally I have worked in the University sector teaching biology and life sciences in addition to research work in addition to running WormCheck.
Even though worms are the most common infection horses will have, there is very little support available for horse owners on how to manage worms sustainably and safely. Therefore, I started WormCheck with three main aims, one; to modernise the way we manage equine parasites in Australia, two; to help prevent drench resistance occurring in Australia, the way it has overseas, and three; to be a small business that is independent of academia and the animal-health industry that can educate horse owners without bias.
As a scientist I do strongly believe that the simpler, the better, and so I aim to make parasite management and deworming as simple and easy for owners as possible. I share a lot of parasitology information through social media, the WormCheck website, and through pieces written for Pony Club Australia, HRCAV and various breed societies.
