Georgia Bates
Training & Horsemanship
Georgia has been passionate about good horsemanship and training and promoting wild horses since 2010. Based in Meredith, Victoria she trains all breeds of horses for clients, teaches clinics and lessons and competes in Extreme Cowboy Racing, Wild horse training events and Colt Start events.
Georgia is the only trainer in Australia who has competed in both the Australian Brumby Challenge and the Extreme Mustang Makeover in America, giving her a depth of experience with wild horses. Georgia believes the horse is never wrong, and aims to help educate people about how to see their horse’s behaviour in a way that does not place blame and negative emotions onto the horse.
Georgia enjoys competing in horsemanship focused competitions as she feels it is a great platform for educating the public about good and ethical horsemanship. Georgia works with many clients who are nervous riders and she has found that by teaching them good groundwork, and good foundations of ridden work based on a belief that the horse is just being a horse, and that it is our job to help them understand, that this makes people safer and more likely to have a good and enjoyable relationship with their horse.

The Horse is never wrong
Training is so much more than just the physical things and exercises we do with the horse, mindset and your beliefs about the horse play a huge factor. When we accept that the horse is never wrong and is just being a horse, we can then view behaviour without negative judgements. Many people still believe their horse is deliberately being naughty and respond to the undesirable behaviour with a negative reaction. When we come to understand that the horse is acting a particular way for a reason, we become problem solvers rather than punishers.
Horses are complex animals in that there are many factors which can influence behaviour. Fear, anxiety, pain, diet, confusion in training, learned behaviour and self preservation behaviours are all very common causes of problems people experience with their horses. None of these problems can be solved if we blame the horse or treat him in a negative way with negative emotions.
I hope to educate more people about not placing negative emotions and judgements onto the horse so that they can have a better relationship with their horse

Journey from Wild
Australia has the largest population of wild horses in the world! Whilst there is much political debate about the right for Brumbies to remain in the wild in Australia due to them being an introduced species, this does not change the fact that they hold a special place in our history and hearts.
I have been passionate about wild horses since 2010 when I began training and rehoming Brumbies. I wish to further promote the suitability of Brumbies as quality riding horses to the wider public to aid in the rehoming and hopefully see changes to better and more humane management of Brumbies in the wild.
Brumbies make wonderful domestic horses not only for riding but also for other uses such as equine therapy. I wish to showcase the trainability and potential of our wild horses and encourage more people to take on Brumbies.
For this demonstration I would present my Brumby who has many years of competition experience and has presented in my education sessions at EQUITQANA Melbourne in 2022 and 2013 in Sydney. I would also bring a more recently captured Brumby, to discuss the training journey from wild over a shorter time period such as a 100 day challenge.
